Description of Significance THE JOHNSON HOTEL AND BOARDING HOUSE IS ONE OF THE ONLY REMAINING COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS ASSOCIATED WITH THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY IN DUNCAN. THE AFRICAN AMERICAN POPULATION IN DUNCAN WAS PRIMARILY DESCENDED FROM CHICKASAW FREEDMEN, FORMER SLAVES OF CHICKASAW INDIANS, GIVEN THEIR FREEDOM AFTER THE CIVIL WAR. THE HOTEL WAS BUILT BY FRED JOHNSON, A PROMINENT LOCAL BLACK BUSINESSMAN. COMPLETED IN 1924, AT THE PEAK OF A LOCAL OIL BOOM, THE HOTEL HOUSED OIL FIELD WORKERS AND THOSE EMPLOYED BY HALIBURTON. LISTED IN THE NATIONAL REGISTER 5/14/1986.
